Kukulu Kumuhana O Anahola is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit organization. Your donations will assist us in many ways. We are moving forward in Phase 2 of our Ulupono Anahola project and would like to see our washing stations and processing areas completed as well as the renovations of our (3) 40ft containers that will be storage for our heavy equipment, tools, and temporary office space and to begin the permitting and building of our youth center. We will be training the community in growing food for their families through the planned (50) community garden plots as well as planting fruit trees, medicinal plants, diversified foods and our native foods like kalo (taro), ulu (breadfruit), uala (sweet potato), maia (banana), nioi (chili pepper), niu (coconut), etc.
We are also raising funds to build a traditional hale or hale halawai and planning to bring cultural practitioners to assist those in our community to learn what kind of materials are needed, where we can find them, begin to gather these resources, then build the hale together.
We would also like to expand our Resilient Leaders & Food Security Program (RLFS) to serve more Native Hawaiian students in the Anahola community. This program recently started in August 2021-2022 school year. Our goal started in reaching 10 middle school students after school once a week for 2-3 hours, but the need was greater so we adjusted our reach to 18-22 middle school students every other week throughout the school year. The students received approximately 5 hours of hands-on outdoor experiences building life skills, perpetuating their culture and applying what they were learning to their households. We currently have reached over 40 households through this program.
Another key area that your funds will assist with is the training of youth and adults in suicide prevention. One of our goals is to have at least one person on every street in Anahola trained in suicide prevention and that at least one staff person will be a certified ASSIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trainer.
As you can see, we have a lot of work ahead of us. Your support is an investment to helping an entire community become more sustainable in food security, youth becoming more resilient and skilled to navigate their future wisely and to become more knowledgeable in helping to lower the crisis rate of suicides of both youth and adults.
